Sinus lift (sinus augmentation) is a procedure indicated in cases of limited bone height in the upper back teeth where placement of a regular size implant is not a possibility.

The maxillary sinuses are empty, air-filled spaces located behind your cheeks and on top of the upper teeth. It is very common that the upper back teeth will extend into these sinuses, and if these teeth have to be removed, there is not much bone remaining to successfully support a dental implant.  The size and shape of this sinus varies from person to person and the sinus can also get larger as you age.

Reasons for having a Sinus Lift may include:

  • Long-term tooth loss in the upper back teeth
  • Bone Loss from injury or periodontal gum disease
  • Trauma to your teeth
  • The Maxillary sinus is just too close to or too large for the area where the dental implant will be placed.

By strengthening and growing bone in this location, dental implants can be placed and secured which improves chewing capacity, function and esthetics.
