A bone graft is a procedure used by Dr. Kazemi to strengthen and rebuild the volume (height & width) of the jaw bone in a 3 dimensional approach which will provide the bony housing necessary for placing a dental implant. This may be necessary if the jaw bone has deteriorated over time from tooth loss, trauma, gum disease or bone disease. Inadequate bony housing complicates placement of a dental implant and could reduce success rate of dental implants long term. Therefore bone graft procedures when indicated are of utmost importance to ensure long term stability, high success rate and correct position of the dental implant.
What is Involved in the Bone Grafting Procedure?
Bone grafting is a fairly simple process that can generally be performed under a local anesthetic. Once the grafting material is prepared for insertion, a small incision is made in the gum tissue and then gently separated from the bone. The bone grafting material is then inserted and the gum is closed using fine suturing material to hold the graph in place. A follow-up appointment will be done within 10 to 14 days to assess the progress and if anything else needs to be done.
How Long After Bone Grafting Can the Dental Implant Be Placed?
The graft integrates and turns into your own bone generally over a period of 3-4 months. After this time has passed, you’ll come in for an X-ray and if your jaw bone has been restored, an implant appointment will then be scheduled.
